How the subtitle converter works

  1. Paste your subtitles into the box, or choose or drop an .srt, .vtt or .sbv file. The format is detected automatically.
  2. Pick the format you need: SRT, VTT, SBV, plain text, or text with timestamps.
  3. Optionally shift every subtitle earlier or later, remove YouTube's repeated auto-caption lines, or keep formatting tags.
  4. Download the converted file or copy it. Nothing is uploaded — it all happens in your browser.

SRT, VTT and SBV: what's the difference?

All three store the same thing — numbered or unnumbered blocks of text, each with a start and end time — but different players expect different formats.

  • SRT (SubRip) is the most widely supported format: video editors, VLC, social platforms and most TVs read it. Timestamps use a comma before the milliseconds: 00:01:02,500.
  • VTT (WebVTT) is the web standard used by HTML5 video players. It starts with a WEBVTT line, uses a full stop in timestamps (00:01:02.500) and can carry positioning, styling and speaker tags.
  • SBV (SubViewer) is what YouTube Studio exports. Each block has a start and end time separated by a comma: 0:01:02.500,0:01:05.000.

Cleaning up YouTube auto-captions

YouTube's automatic captions scroll up line by line, so when you download them every line appears twice and the file is full of word-timing tags. The converter detects these files and removes the repeated lines and tags, leaving one clean line per caption — ready to convert to SRT or to read as a transcript.

Automatic captions still miss names, technical terms and speaker changes. If the text matters — a lecture, a court recording or a published video — have the captions checked by people.

Why captions matter

Captions make video accessible to deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers, let people watch with the sound off, and give search engines text to index. Many accessibility rules for public bodies and universities expect accurate captions on published video. Accurate means correct words, correct speakers and timing that matches the audio, which is where automatic captions most often fall short.

Subtitle converter — questions

How do I convert SRT to VTT?

Paste the SRT file or drop it into the converter, choose VTT (WebVTT) and press Download. The converter adds the WEBVTT header and changes the comma in each timestamp to a full stop, which is the main difference between the two formats.

How do I convert VTT to SRT?

Drop the .vtt file in, choose SRT and download. Cues are numbered, timestamps switch to the SRT comma style, and VTT-only extras such as cue settings, NOTE and STYLE blocks are removed so any player or editor will open the file.

Can I turn subtitles into a plain-text transcript?

Yes. Choose Plain text to get readable paragraphs with the timestamps removed, or Text with timestamps for one line per subtitle with its start time. For YouTube auto-captions, tick the option to remove repeated lines first.

How do I fix subtitles that are out of sync?

Enter an offset in seconds under Shift timing: a positive number makes every subtitle appear later, a negative one earlier. If the drift grows over the video, the subtitles were timed to a different cut and need re-timing.

Is my subtitle file uploaded anywhere?

No. The converter runs entirely in your browser, so your file never leaves your device and nothing is stored.

Can you make captions for my video?

Yes. We create SRT and VTT captions timed to your video and checked by people, from $1.50 per minute. Upload the video for an instant quote.
