What transcription costs, and why rates differ

Transcription is priced per audio minute: the length of the recording, not the time it takes to type. Rates differ by the kind of work because some recordings take far longer to get right.

  • General ($0.80/min) — interviews, podcasts and everyday recordings with clear speakers.
  • Business ($0.90/min) — meetings and earnings calls with several speakers and company names.
  • Academic ($0.95/min) — research interviews and focus groups, where every participant must be labelled consistently.
  • Medical ($1.25/min) — clinical dictation and research with specialist terminology.
  • Legal ($1.40/min) — depositions, hearings and statements, transcribed verbatim with objections.
  • Captions ($1.50/min) — SRT and VTT files timed to your video.

What changes the price

Three things move a quote: length, turnaround and audio difficulty. Length and turnaround are in the calculator. Difficult audio — heavy background noise, strong accents, many overlapping speakers or a language other than English — can raise the rate; when it does, our team confirms the quote by email before you pay.

To keep costs down, record close to the speakers, use one microphone per person where you can, and trim long silences or music before uploading.

Human transcription versus automatic transcripts

Automatic transcripts are cheap but miss speaker changes, names, numbers and jargon, and need careful checking before you can quote or file them. Every Soundtoscript transcript passes three stages: a first-pass draft, a professional editor who corrects names, terms and speakers, and a separate quality check before delivery.

Our rates start from general $0.80, business $0.90, academic $0.95, medical $1.25, legal $1.40, captions $1.50 per audio minute. Rush delivery within 24 hours adds 50%, and every order has a $3.00 minimum.

One hour is 60 billable minutes: $48.00 for general transcription and $84.00 for legal transcription at standard turnaround. Use the calculator for other lengths and services.

Is the calculator's price final?

It uses the same rates as our upload form. The confirmed price is set when we measure your uploaded files and appears on the page as soon as the upload finishes. Difficult audio can change it, and you always see the final price before paying. Quotes hold for 7 days.

How are minutes counted?

By audio minute: the total length of your recordings, rounded up to the next whole minute. Silence and music inside a recording count as audio time.

How long does transcription take?

Standard delivery is 2–3 business days after payment. Rush delivery is within 24 hours of payment at the rush rate.

Are timestamps or speaker labels extra?

Speaker labels are included. Timestamps are included at no extra cost for now, at the interval you choose on the upload form.
