SRT to VTT converter

Turn an SRT subtitle file into a valid WebVTT file — the format HTML5 video, most web players and the W3C caption spec expect. Paste or drop the file and convert it in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Your file never leaves your device — the conversion runs in your browser.

Shift: a positive number makes subtitles appear later, a negative one earlier (e.g. -1.5).

Paste or drop a subtitle file to convert it.

How the subtitle converter works

  1. Paste your SRT text into the box, or drop the .srt file onto it.
  2. Check that the output format says VTT.
  3. Press Convert: the cues are renumbered, the WEBVTT header is added and the timings switch to dot decimals.
  4. Copy the result, or download it as a .vtt file.

SRT and WebVTT, side by side

The two formats carry the same information in slightly different packaging. This is what changes when an SRT file becomes VTT:

Which format does your player need?

Convert to VTT when the captions will be shown in a browser: a <video> element with a <track>, a web player such as Video.js or Plyr, or a course platform built on HTML5 video.

Keep SRT when the file is going to a desktop editor, a video platform's upload form or a client who asked for SRT. YouTube's subtitle upload accepts SRT, SBV and SMI but not VTT — for that, use the VTT to SRT converter instead.

If you are unsure, convert and keep both. The timing is identical, so the two files stay interchangeable.

What the converter keeps, and what it adds

Kept: every cue's start and end time, the order of the cues, line breaks inside a cue, and speaker names typed into the text. Markup such as <i> and <b> is stripped by default — tick Keep styling tags before converting if you want it carried over.

Added: the WEBVTT header the format requires, and dot decimals in the timings. Nothing is retimed, merged or re-flowed, so the captions land exactly where they did before.

Not added: cue positioning, voice tags or CSS classes. Those are WebVTT features with no SRT equivalent, so inventing them would change how the captions look. Add them afterwards if you need them.

Subtitle converter — questions

How do I convert an SRT file to VTT?

Paste the SRT text or drop the .srt file into the converter, set the output to VTT and press Convert. The result is a valid WebVTT file you can copy or download. The conversion happens in your browser; the file is never uploaded.

What is the difference between SRT and VTT?

SRT is the older, plainer format: numbered cues and timings with a comma before the milliseconds. WebVTT is the HTML5 caption format: it starts with the line WEBVTT, uses a dot before the milliseconds, and can carry cue settings, speaker voice tags and CSS styling.

Does converting change the timing?

No. Only the decimal separator changes, from a comma (00:00:01,000) to a dot (00:00:01.000). Cue order, line breaks and durations are untouched.

Will my subtitles still work in HTML5 video?

Yes — VTT is the format the HTML5 <track> element expects, so the converted file can be referenced directly from a <track src> attribute.

Can I convert VTT back to SRT?

Yes, with the VTT to SRT converter. It is the same tool with the output set the other way.

Are YouTube's automatic captions valid SRT?

No. YouTube's auto-caption download is a rolling format with duplicated words across cues, and it is not valid SRT or VTT. The converter detects it and warns you rather than producing a file that will fail validation.
